Knee Pain: Causes, Symptoms and Common Conditions
Knee pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal problems and can affect both active and sedentary individuals.
It may present as:
- pain in the front, inner (medial), or outer (lateral) knee
- stiffness, swelling, or reduced mobility
- discomfort during walking, running, squatting, or climbing stairs
In most cases, knee pain is not caused by a single structure, but by a combination of factors such as:
- muscle tightness or weakness
- tendon overload
- joint stiffness
- altered biomechanics involving the hip, ankle, or foot
Most Common Knee Conditions
There are several conditions that can lead to knee pain. The most frequent include:
- Patellofemoral pain syndrome (runner’s knee)
- Iliotibial band syndrome (IT band syndrome) → pain on the outer side of the knee
- Pes anserinus syndrome (inner knee pain) → often related to sartorius, gracilis, and semitendinosus
- Medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints) → often associated with overload of the tibialis posterior and soleus
- Tendinopathies (patellar tendon, quadriceps tendon)
- Knee osteoarthritis (gonarthrosis / knee arthritis)
- General knee pain (gonalgia)
Each condition may require a different approach, which is why a generic exercise program is often not effective.
Important Note About Meniscus and Ligaments
When it comes to structures such as:
- meniscus
- anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)
- posterior cruciate ligament (PCL)
- collateral ligaments
there are no reliable self-tests that can provide a definitive diagnosis.
These conditions require a proper orthopedic and clinical evaluation.
However, inside our PDF guide, you will still find basic and supportive exercise protocols to help manage symptoms and improve function safely.
