ACHILLES TENDON PAIN: PHYSIOTHERAPY GUIDE AND EXERCISES

Recover your mobility with free physiotherapy exercises and a progressive rehabilitation program for Achilles tendinopathy.

Achilles tendon pain is one of the most common overuse injuries, especially among people who walk frequently, participate in sports, or have recently increased their level of physical activity.

It can develop gradually or appear after a period of increased loading, making everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, running, or even standing for long periods uncomfortable.

Common symptoms include:

✅ pain at the back of the ankle

✅ morning stiffness

✅ pain while walking or running

✅ pain during or after physical activity

✅ a feeling of tightness in the calf or Achilles tendon

Although many people refer to this condition as Achilles tendinitis, in most cases it is actually Achilles tendinopathy, meaning the tendon has temporarily lost part of its ability to tolerate and adapt to load.

👉 The good news is that, in most cases, a progressive physiotherapy program with targeted exercises can help reduce pain and restore function without the need for invasive treatments.

👨‍⚕️ ANTONIO

I’m Antonio, a physiotherapist specialising in musculoskeletal conditions and the founder of PhysioCareHub.

My goal is to help you understand the source of your pain and guide you through clear, progressive, and evidence-based rehabilitation programs.

Our philosophy is simple:

Understand the problem, restore movement, and progress step by step.

❓ COULD IT BE ACHILLES TENDINOPATHY?

The following questions are not intended to provide a diagnosis, but they can help you understand whether your symptoms may be related to an Achilles tendon problem.

Guiding Questions

❓ Do you feel pain at the back of your ankle while walking or running?

❓ Is your Achilles tendon particularly stiff during your first steps in the morning?

❓ Does your pain increase when climbing stairs, walking quickly, or jumping?

❓ Is your Achilles tendon painful when you press on it or when performing heel raises?

🧪 Quick Self-Test

Slowly perform a double-leg heel raise.

If it feels comfortable, try performing the same movement standing on your affected leg only.

❓ Do you experience pain, weakness, or difficulty completing the movement?

👉 If you recognise several of these symptoms, you may be experiencing Achilles tendinopathy and could benefit from a conservative rehabilitation program.

👉 If your symptoms do not match those described above, or if your pain is located elsewhere in the foot or ankle, a comprehensive ankle and foot assessment may help identify the real cause of your problem.

📄 PHASE 1 — FREE

The first phase is designed for the early stages of recovery.

Its main goals are to help you:

✅ reduce pain

✅ improve your Achilles tendon’s ability to tolerate load

✅ restore calf strength

✅ improve ankle mobility

✅ gradually return to walking, running, and physical activity

Inside the program you’ll find:

📖 a step-by-step physiotherapy guide

🏋️ progressive Achilles tendon exercises

⚖️ balance and proprioception exercises

🦵 calf strengthening exercises

💡 practical advice on load management

🏠 an easy-to-follow home rehabilitation program

Not sure this matches your symptoms?

If your symptoms don’t completely match what you’ve read, or if you’re still unsure about the source of your pain, your condition may involve other joints, tendons, muscles, nerves or nearby structures.

In that case, a more comprehensive assessment may help you better understand your symptoms and identify the most appropriate rehabilitation pathway.

🚀 WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Recovering from Achilles tendinopathy requires a gradual progression of loading.

For this reason, the rehabilitation program will continue with more advanced phases focusing on:

✅ progressive calf strengthening

✅ single-leg loading exercises

✅ functional exercises for walking and running

✅ balance and neuromuscular control

✅ plyometric training and return-to-sport preparation

✅ injury prevention and long-term tendon health

Each new phase gradually increases the level of difficulty, helping you safely restore your Achilles tendon function and return to the activities you enjoy.
